Strategy is a list of what the company deliberately does not do

Focus during growth is defined not by a list of goals, but by a list of refusals.

KORVENIQ CEO / 2026

During growth a company meets ever more logical opportunities: a new market, an extra feature, an adjacent product, an interesting partner. Each looks reasonable and urgent on its own. Together they can turn a strategy into a list of everything.

I am convinced that strategy is first of all the list of what a company deliberately does not do. Below is how we use such a list to keep focus when every new opportunity looks logical.

Why a default “yes” is dangerous

Agreeing is easier than declining: a refusal needs explaining, while agreement looks like growth. But a team's resources are limited, and each “yes” takes attention from what has already been decided to be the priority.

When opportunities are accepted without explicit comparison, the company gradually stretches in every direction and stops being strong in any one of them.

HOW THE REFUSAL LIST IS BUILT

01RefusalWhat the company declines in the current period.
02ReasonWhy this choice fits the strategy.
03Review conditionsWhat must change for the decision to be reopened.
04OwnerWho ensures the refusal does not erode.
“A strong strategy is visible not in what you do, but in what you consciously decided not to do.”
CEO, KORVENIQ

The refusal list as a working document

We record what we decline and why: which markets, customer types and directions are outside the current choice. Next to each we note the conditions under which the decision may be revisited.

Such a document saves time: when a tempting offer arrives, the team checks the list rather than starting the discussion from zero.

Questions we ask a new opportunity

Does it strengthen what we already do best? What would we have to stop to pursue it? Who will be accountable for it? If the answer to any of these is unclear, the opportunity waits.

Sometimes a good idea simply arrives at the wrong moment. Postponing it and returning later is part of strategy too.

The refusal list helps quickly test a new opportunity against the strategy.

How to maintain focus

The refusal list is revisited regularly with the leadership team. We look at what proved wrong, which conditions have changed and where the choice is due for an update.

Focus is not a one-off decision but a habit. It requires honesty with ourselves and readiness to explain to the team why we are not going where going seems logical.
